Sitting at the Feet of Jesus

Thursday. My day to go visit folks and be in the office. I look forward to Thursdays even though they are busy and most times my schedule ends up being more flexible than I am! Is that even possible? I look forward to visiting folks in the nursing home, hospital, and those who are homebound. Sometimes the visits are short, sometimes they are long. Some conversations really don’t have any theological issues being discussed and sometimes long periods of silence are fused between conversation.

What is so amazing about this? Well 2 years ago I would have told you no if you wanted me to go visit someone. Most importantly anyone who was sick or heaven forbid, in a nursing home. You see for me those places represented despair and hopelessness. No good memories could ever be forged in places like that.

Confession time! I was wrong! I have found hope, love, grace, and mercy in these places. I no longer dread going to them, in fact, they seem to be the highlight of my week. The stories, the visits, the conversations, the connections are priceless.

God has sent us out into this world to help those who cannot help themselves. Sometimes it means we have to step out of our comfort zone, out of the box, and do something extraordinary. For me, it was about loving people where they are. We all need someone to love us, to care for us, and to hold us up, when we can’t stand up on our own.

Jesus does that for me everyday. I was reminded this week in my sermon prep that I need to take time and let God’s blessings spill over me. My daily communion with him should be more than just prayer, devotions, and Bible reading, but true “communion” with him. That’s my goal, to sit at the feet of Jesus like Mary did, and listen to the Master’s voice!

The Cubs!

Well, spring is officially here. I know this because baseball season has officially started. It is said by die hard baseball fans that the coming of spring is measured not in the temperature or the calendar, but on when the Baseball Commissioner sets opening day.

Opening day (Spring if you will), is preceded by months of training and practice. The players prep for the upcoming season so they can do the very best that they can. They are all eyeing the prize…a World Series Win. On opening day, it is a true equal playing field. No one has won or lost any games. Hopes are high and of course everyone is in first place, or last place depending on how you view your glass!

Isn’t great to know that Jesus showed up on opening day and won every battle against evil and has secured the big win for all of us…eternal life! I get frustrated with my cubbies sometimes as they tend to be winning only to lose it in the last two innings, but with Christ…we are winners all the time!

Welcome

I’m excited! This is my first ever blog post! Our site is back up and running after it was hijacked by some hackers and it has caused me to reload all the data. I have learned to do some really nice things with WordPress so hopefully, you will enjoy this website. The most exciting thing is that I can update the website and post blogs right from my iPad2! Technology sure is great when it is working to our standards.

Sort of like people, we really like them when they are within our standards of cooperation and humility. When they fall outside of that standard, they become less tolerable. It reminds me of Jesus who certainly “tested” the waters of the religious leaders of his day. He didn’t really measure up to their standards and he certainly didn’t go for the status quo. If Jesus were here today, preaching, healing, performing miracles and hanging out with fishermen, would he be the type of guy that measured up to our standards?
